Basseterre: St. Kitts, Thursday, September 03, 2026: The Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) hosted a series of workshops from Tuesday, September, 01 to Wednesday, September 02. The goal of the sessions was to analyze the constituents of the OECS Harmonized Primary Curriculum (OHPC) undergoing pilot implementation, enhancing teachers’ expertise, abilities, and classroom methods.
The workshops were carefully categorized and tailored to meet the specific needs of educators at different levels of the education system. The sessions focused on three key areas: addressing issues emerging from the piloted curriculum, preparing teachers for the rollout of the Grade 3 Enhanced Mathematics Curriculum, and introducing secondary school French teachers to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The review of the OECS Harmonized Kindergarten Curriculum provided educators with an opportunity to reflect on their experiences during the piloting phase and examine key issues that emerged. Through discussions and collaborative activities, teachers were able to share experiences, identify challenges, and explore strategies to improve the implementation of the curriculum in their classrooms. The Rollout of the Grade 3 Enhanced Mathematics Curriculum workshop sought to empower teachers as the sessions provided educators with an opportunity to become familiar with the curriculum, explore instructional approaches, and develop greater confidence in delivering mathematics content effectively.
Another series of workshops introduced secondary school Modern Language (French) teachers to the CEFR Framework, an internationally recognized framework that guides teaching, learning, and assessment of French. The introduction is intended to strengthen teachers’ understanding of language proficiency levels and promote consistent approaches to language instruction and assessment.
Teachers of Form 3 and 4 Social Studies, Geography, and Integrated Science participated in a PADF Eco-Youth Ventures -sponsored workshop aimed at strengthening environmental education and awareness. The workshop was held through a collaborative effort involving the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF), and the Ministry of Tourism of St. Kitts and Nevis. The initiative sought to equip educators with knowledge and practical tools to incorporate environmental sustainability and eco-conscious practices into their classrooms.
The workshops demonstrate the Curriculum Development Unit’s commitment to delivering professional development opportunities that address educators’ specific needs while aligning with the priorities and goals of the education system.
